A Gogol Drum Stand | Jun 26, 2007 | Talk to me (2)

//...at the Gogol Bordello show, Bonnaroo 2007.

Bonnaroo 2007, suuuuuuuuuuuch a fantastic festival, on so many different levels. This photo, taken upside down and while not a great shot, caught one of the moments
I loved most about the show, when Eugene Hutz crowd surfed the audience during the finale, ON TOP OF A DRUM. just sick, and incredible.

(start of long winded review)

Highlights:
* Gogol Bordello's stage show (insanely energetic and a must see show, made me lose my mind, my number one show)
* Tool's sound (holy HARD, LOUD and CRISP. And with Tom Morello stepping on stage for a tune, even crazier)
* Flaming Lips stage show (a feast for the senses. From arriving on an Alien ship, to requesting and having millions of
laser pointers shot straight at him, insanely good)
* Ben Harper, ?uestlove and John Paul Jones (Led Zep bassist) jamming, and the chills hearing the opening cords of Dazed and Confused.
* The White Stripes ripping my ears out.
* The Black Keys and their lo-fi goodness.
* The Roots and the 2 and a 1/2 hours of body groovin' (Their cover of Roxanne was the best of the weekend)
* Aesop Rock throwin' it down.
* Wolfmother rockin' hard.
* Spoon, for sounding as good as i hoped.
* Feist's set (wow, her stage presence is adorable).
* Mavis Staples and her great soul sound.
* Rodrigo y Gabriela's guitar play (their sound with two acoustic guitars was incredible)
* Manu Chao's set (such great, great world music)
* Elvis Perkins along with members of Cold War Kids and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, in the media tent acoustically jamming for a few tunes.
* Glow sticks seemingly being back in demand, and seeing one fly through the air every 3 seconds (and seeing the odd one bouncing back into the air, off someones mind)
* Being passed a bowl, at the minimum, 30-35 times.
* Widespread Panics 3+ hour set
* The Bluenote Blues/Jazz tent...was able to catch an hour of the brilliance.
* Govt Mule and another 3+ hour harrrrrrrrd set
* What seems like a Black Sabbath cover weekend, with several intense versions of the greatness.
* The friendliness of strangers, to just shoot the breeze for a few minutes, and leave a little fingerprint on the weekend.
* The film tent, which was great to end the nights at 4am, watching Fellini freak outs.
* Falling asleep at 3pm or at 3am, head on a backpack, listening to tunes.
* The sun shining all weekend, thankfully.
* A sidetrip to Graceland after the Bonnaroo, and seeing Elvis in all is gaudy 70s pimp-memorabilia.
* Bonnaroo HAS to be the best music fest in North America, hands down...so perfect on so many levels. However....

Lowlights:
* The Police (sooo underwhelming)
* Kings of Leon (expected so much more, guess not my thing)
* Too many good bands too see, and at conflicting times with someone else you wanna check out
* The Comedy Tent, and its huuuuuuuuuuuuge lineups. (missing Dave Attel, Davis Cross and Lewis Black sucked, but not
to miss other wicked bands to wait in hour+ lineups)
* String Cheese Incident, wanted to like them more, but couldn't.
* the loooooooong boring drive from Toronto to Tennessee, but at least kept lively with satellite radio and good company.
* the dust kicked up everywhere was nuts....my non-smoking lungs aged 2 years with all my breathing that weekend.
* my new phobia is realized and confirmed... 'number-twos-in-a-port-o-potty-phobia'.
* My poor car needing some extra love after its 3,500 km roadtrip...although finding out the diesel ride now gets 1,250 kms per tank is kinda cool.
* And the sidetrip out to Graceland, because while it was worth checking out, it wasn't worth it. go figure.

(end of longer winded review)

...so many more things i noticed, bands i saw, and experiences i'm forgetting, but those are some key thoughts about the weekend. You'll see some what my camera lens saw for the next bunch of posts.
